There are a lot of hotel options available to you in Heidelberg. Heidelberg is host to several million visitors a year, so finding a hotel should not be difficult for you (apart from at peak times like the German Grand Prix and Heidelberger Herbst when an early hotel booking is an absolute must). If you have never been to Heidelberg before then we’re sure you would like some tips on which area to stay in, so here you are (but generally don’t worry as there aren’t really any bad areas, so you can’t go too far wrong):
Old Town
This is the most popular area to stay in for visitors, but it is also the most expensive. The hotels tend to be quite small and range from basic to luxurious.
Advantages:
- You’ll be in the historic heart of Heidelberg with all its hustle and bustle
- Everything will be within walking distance, so no car needed
- You’ll get the true Heidelberg experience
- Many, many restaurants and bars on your doorstep
Disadvantages:
- You pay a premium as demand outstrips supply
- Can be quite noisy, so choose your room carefully
- If you have a car, you will have to pay to park it
If we were visiting Heidelberg for the weekend, we would stay in the old town.
Near the train station
If you are arriving by train and want a hotel nearby there are a few options. This area isn’t “old” but can be convenient if you don’t want to jump on a bus or tram to the old town with your bags. There’s nothing really to see in this area, so you will need to jump on the bus/tram for the 10 minute journey into the old town.
Advantages:
- If arriving by train you’ll be checked in at your hotel before you know it
- Less expensive than the old town and only 10 minutes away by bus or tram
- Quieter than the old town and much less busy
Disadvantages:
- You’ll need to jump on public transport to see the sites
- Mostly permit parking, so you’ll need to pay for parking
- Limited selection of local restaurants and bars
We’ve stayed in the Hotel Central, 2 minutes walk from the station and can highly recommend it.
Weststadt
Situated between the train station area and the old town, Weststadt offers a selection of hotels ideal for a short stay. Weststadt is quite an exclusive area to live, with some lovely old bulidings.
Advantages:
- Well connected by public transport or an easy taxi ride from the train station when you arrive
- Slightly less expensive than the old town and only a 10 minute walk away
- Quieter than the old town and much less busy
Disadvantages:
- You’ll have that 10 minute walk to the old town which may become annoying after a couple of days
- Mostly permit parking, so you’ll need to pay for parking
- Limited selection of local restaurants and bars
North of the river: Neuenheim and Handschuhsheim
Cross the old or the new bridges from the old town and you will find yourself in Neuenheim, keep going north and you move into Handschuhsheim. Both are very expensive areas to live in, so are well served by nice local restaurants and bars. Depending upon where you stay you may be able to walk into the old town or if that walk is a little too far, you can jump on a bus or tram.
Advantages:
- Well connected by public transport
- Slightly less expensive than the old town, but covers a wide area, so double check how far you will be from the old town
- Quieter than the old town and less busy
Disadvantages:
- You’ll have either a short walk or short bus journey to the old town which may become annoying after a couple of days
- Mostly permit parking, so you’ll need to pay for parking
- A bit of a hike from the train station if you arrive by train

Hirschgasse
This is the place to stay if you really want something unique and luxurious within walking distance of all the major sites. The Hotel Hirschgasse was first mentioned in 1472 (20 years before the discovery of America) in an aristocratic love story. It is situated peacefully in a little side valley, in a select residential area at the beginning of the world famous “Philosophers walk” on the northern banks of the River Neckar, opposite the old Castle. It is a beautiful, small hotel offering exquisite Laura Ashley suites – even with whirlpool tubs. Built in timber style and lots of sandstone cubes, it reflects the medieval times of Heidelberg.
Each of the 20 suites has it own name, like Blueberry Suite, Paisley Suite or Apricot Suite and offers lavishly luxury with antiques, thick carpets, triple lined curtains and original leather Chesterfields. From here you enjoy a fascinating short 10 minute walk to the heart of the Old town – always having the dominating castle on the other side within your view. And then you are conquering the town by just strolling over the Old Bridge. You can use the bus stop Nr. 34 which brings you to the hotel. For your car there is enough own free parking in front of our hotel.

Hotel Ritter

Lovely small hotel with 15 rooms. All rooms are beautifully decorated with modern facilities, including internet connection and TV. The hotel itself is located slightly outside of the centre of town in Handschuhsheim, but is only a 10 minute bus or tram ride to the centre (Bismarckplatz). Also has a very nice restaurant attached, which serves breakfast in the morning. English spoken. On street parking. Very friendly and helpful management and staff.

Deutscher Kaiser
Located just outside of the old town (3 minutes from the tram stop, then a 7 minute tram ride). So if you fancy a quieter location away from the crowds but in one of the more exclusive residential areas of Heidelberg this will be for you. You will also get a little bit more for your money than staying in the centre.
The hotel was most recently renovated in 2006 with 17 hotel rooms and studios, all with ISDN phone, radio, hairdryer and TV. Wireless-LAN is available in all rooms for extra charge.
The hotel is effectively split into 2 joined buildings (1) The Deutscher Kasier with 9 elegant studios (each with room for up to 4 people) and (2) the Dependance with 8 modern single and double rooms. All rooms have private bathrooms.
The country style cafe bar is a nice place to relax in the evening with a glass of wine and a snack.

Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten
The Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten is ideally located next to the river in the heart of the old town. All the major tourist sites, shops, bars and restaurants are within walking distance. If you’re driving, you’ll park your car when you arrive and not use your car again until you depart. The hotel has a lovely traditional feel.
Guest rooms with private bathroom and TV are very comfortable, providing the ideal base for your stay in Heidelberg.

Hotel Acor
This is a classic modern, comfortable hotel right in the heart of Heidelberg. Situated close to the old part of town and not far away from the congresshall, the acor-hotel is the ideal starting point both for congress participants and tourists who want to take a stroll around the castle or the old town. Hotel Central
The Hotel Central is located a convenient 2 minute walk from Heidelberg’s main train station. The hotel is next to both bus and tram lines for quick access to the centre of Heidelberg or an easy 10 to 15 minute walk. The hotel has a very pleasant breakfast room serving breakfast buffet, a sophisticated Bistro for light eating and drinking in the evening and a very new fitness room to keep yourself in shape! In the summer a very pleasant beer garden can be accessed from the Bistro. The hotel was completely renovated in December 2008.
The very well presented rooms come with private bathroom (with shower), telephone, radio, TV (with free access to cable channels), hairdryer, magnifying-mirror, Fax and note book adapters. Baby/child beds available on request. The Hotel Central offers 48 rooms and suites in total. There is a video sureyed Garage, a laundry-service and an airport-shuttle or sightseeing-tour with an American stretch-limo available. Wireless Internet access is available in all rooms and the lobby area.

Hackteufel
The Hackteufel is a lovely, small and traditional family run hotel ideally situated in the very heart of the old town with all major attractions within easy walking distance (including the castle). The hotel has been recently renovated and offers 20 high standard rooms of varying size and character.
The Hackteufel boasts its own, very well respected restaurant serving traditional German cuisine (you can sit outside during the summer months and watch the world go by….).
All room rates are without breakfast, but we offer a rich breakfast buffet for 11.- Euro per person.
Single rooms, double rooms and double rooms for single use (for guests staying longer) are offered. Every room has its own special character and piece of history. Every room has a bathroom or shower, WC, hair dryer, cable TV and telephone, the larger rooms have refrigerator and the 2 top rooms are air conditioned. WiFi is free of charge and available in the rooms and the restaurant.
Holländer Hof
Location: Neckarstaden 66 D 69117 Heidelberg, in the old town close to the old bridge
The “Holländer Hof” hotel is ideally situated right in the heart of the old town next to the famous old bridge. All the major sites are within walking distance – no need for a car. The castle is about 15 minutes walk from the hotel. You can also use the cable car which leaves near the hotel (if you don’t fancy the climb up!). Please ask for the schedule for guided tours at the front desk.
The hotel boasts 39 rooms. All rooms are furnished with telephone (analog access to the internet), radio, TV, safe, hairdryer, minibar and shower/ bathroom. A few rooms are provided for the additional comfort of handicapped people. The hotel is 100% no smoking. Wireless Internet access is available throughout the hotel.

The Holländer Hof have completely renovated the fourth floor in November 2006. Guests will enjoy the air-conditioned new rooms during the hot summer season this year.
