What's on in English?
The short answer is: not a lot. The longer answer would explain how most films that are shown in Germany are dubbed into German. This means that you're going to hear Clint Eastwood speaking German - this can be quite disconcerting. Luckily, for those of us who like to see films in their original form, there are some cinemas that show films in English with German subtitles. See the cinema section for more details.
Theatre is almost exclusively in German except for some tourist productions in the summer - see the theatre section for details.

Cinema
All cinemas in Heidelberg are non-smoking, but they do let you drink beer!
The Gloriette and Gloria cinemas (Hauptstraße 146, Tel: 25319) often shows films in their original version. When you check the film schedule, if the film has "OmU" next to it, this means that it will be shown in the original language with German subtitles. The Gloria and Gloriette are conveniently located in the centre of the old town. The cinemas are pretty old and small - but the films are shown in English so quit complaining! You can also buy yourself a beer and take it into the cinema with you - very civilised.
The only other cinema in the area that shows films in English on a regular basis is Kinopolis. This is a very modern, American style, 12 screen cinema located some 10 to 15 KM outside of Heidelberg. You'll need a car to get there. Go to the Kinopolis web site for directions.

Theatre
During the summer, a big attraction for visitors is the Castle Festival. The Castle Festival runs over a number of weeks and offers a selection of music and theatre productions in the Castle grounds. Some of the theatre productions are actually in English e.g. The Student Prince. Later this year we will publish the program for the summer festival here.
