About this section
In this section we've decided to split up the different eating options by the type of establishment. We define a restaurant as being somewhere you go to eat and you must eat otherwise you won't get a table. We define a bar/café as being somewhere you can go for a drink or for a meal or for both - but there is no pressure on you to eat if you don't want to. We define fast food as somewhere you stand in a queue, order your food, receive it almost immediatly and then eat it quickly either standing up or sitting down (probably followed by some form of indigestion).
In each section we further subdivide by the area of town that the establishment is located in.
After each restaurant there's a link to "review", click on this and send us your review of the food, service and general ambience of the restaurant that you visited. We'll then publish your comments on this page.
All food establishments listed in this section have been visited by e-heidelberg.com, we've paid our money, eaten our food and perhaps had one or two glasses of beer - so we're speaking from experience - but if you don't agree with our take on a place, please let us know and we'll go back again and see what we missed.
Visitors from North America should be aware that the eating experience in Germany is probably somewhat different to the one you experience at home. To start with, in most restaurants/places to eat, except the most expensive ones, don't wait to be seated - just grab yourself an empty table and if the cafe is full and you're not too shy, you can always ask the people at a half full table whether they mind sharing with you..... you never know you might make some friends. Once you've ordered your meal expect to wait a little bit longer than you are perhaps used to. Once you've finished your meal you will need to ask for the bill, it will not be brought automatically to you as in the US. Eating in Europe is supposed to be an unhurried, pleasureable experience - so don't rush and don't feel any pressure to give up your table, you can stay there all night if you wish.
At e-heidelberg.com we care about you, our customers. So we are determined to visit every single bar and restaurant, sample every single meal and alcoholic beverage, so that we can report back to you, our customers. So, on with the mission......

What's on offer?
Heidelberg has a great variety of places to eat. You can get German, French, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Indian and so on and so on - you can basically get what you want. There is also pretty much something for everyone's budget - a curry for € 2.5 all the way up to a plate of novelle cuisine for € 50.
You are of course in Germany, so during your visit you should definitely try some of the local food - we think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
As a rough guide to costs, you should be able to get a fast food meal for under € 5 per person, a meal in a bar/restaurant for around € 12.50 (depends how much you drink of course!) and a meal in a reasonable restaurant for € 15 and upwards.
