Different ways to extend your stay in Heidelberg
A lot of visitors that come to Heidelberg decide that they would actually quite fancy living here. There are a number of ways in which you can do this - this section explains a few of them.
Apart from marrying a wealthy local, there are two sensible ways to do this:
- Study at Heidelberg University
- Get a job here
Heidelberg university runs a number of exchange programs with other universities around the world - get on one of these. Heidelberg University is a very well respected institution around the world, particularly in the areas of medicine and physics to name just two.
Alternatively, if you're not interested in studying or have already studied, you could try and find yourself a job here. Obviously the ability to speak German would increase your chances and the number of opportunities available to you. But all is not lost if you don't speak German - there are many people in Heidelberg who only have a rudimentary understanding of German, but live and work here. In the next section are some links to companies in the Heidelberg area where it is possible to find work without being able to speak German. If you just want to stay here for a few months, then your best bet is to get some bar work. There are a number of bars in Heidelberg (see the drinking section) where the majority of the customers are English speaking and the bar staff don't need much German to be able to do their jobs.
